Medication safety in sport is a big component of Sports Pharmacists commitment to athlete health and wellbeing.
"How much more ibuprofen can I give me child today?"
"How long until he can get back in the game?"
"How long until they return to play..." should not be the first question on the mind of athlete sport personnel or parents, but it may be the first question they ask.
The first question should be, "What is the most appropriate treatment for this PERSON?"
Empower the athletes to speak up
Educate youth sports teams together to encourage them to speak up for each other. Make sure they feel it is okay to ask another trusted adult right away with anything that churns their gut. Sharing of medication, inhalers or treatments are issues that might come up.
Avoid Overuse of Drugs in Sport
Too much, too often, wrong drug choice, or use to mask symptoms are not acceptable practices.
