Module 1: Roles and Responsibilities of the Team Pharmacist

Team Pharmacists are licensed pharmacists, working as Athlete Support Personnel (ASP) trained in sports pharmacy and anti-doping, and serving as the medication and substance experts on the sports medical team or in any setting with high-performance athletes.

A Team Pharmacist is a medical professional that upholds sports integrity while working with an athlete for performance goals. Providing pharmaceutical care for athletes at all stages of their athletic career, a Team Pharmacist balances immediate athletic performance demands with long-term health goals. With the ability to accurately interpret the WADA List of Prohibited Substance and Methods, a Team Pharmacist helps avoid inadvertent doping and offers guidance on therapeutic use of prescriptions or finding other options that are not prohibited in sport. When a prohibited substance is the best legitimate treatment option, a Team Pharmacist is meticulous with document collection to assist with Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE) applications for athletes to submit. Pharmacovigilance and risk avoidance are used by a Team Pharmacist to guide athletes and other Athlete Support Personnel in selection of medications or dietary supplements to ensure compliance with anti-doping regulations and athlete safety and well-being.
