Module 4: Athlete Perspective
If you watched any of the personal stories of the athletes at the Olympics, you heard about the internal and external pressures on athletes. These pressures are unique for those in the RTP because the athletes give up privacy to allow access to their personal life and health documents in order to pursue their career.
Try to relate: Can you even imagine your employer's delegate watching you directly, fully exposed, deliver a urine sample for a drug test? Can you imagine having an enforcement agency knock on the front door of your private residence at 0600 to collect a sample?
Athletes agree to these privacy "modifications" in order to uphold clean sport. To prove they are not cheating. To participate in elite sport. In surveys, most say that it is acceptable.
But, what causes anxiety? The medications and supplements and TUEs still cause anxiety for athletes.
This module is intended to raise awareness of the pressures and opinions athletes may have about medications, doping substances, and other therapies. Put yourself in the position of the athlete as a career path. It’s often very demanding, with low pay, until you make it to the top, and when reaching the top, you are often criticized in public for performance, injuries, and personal life choices. Imagine sharing your private health information with a system you, as an athlete, are told to trust and believe in to protect clean sport. What questions might arise as you agree to give up your privacy in exchange for pursuing your career as an athlete?
